The Waiting Room - a single parent's unflinching account of living with breast cancer
When Victoria Mapplebeck was diagnosed with breast cancer, she decided to record each step of her journey from diagnosis to recovery. Shot on an iPhone X, Victoria filmed her time in waiting rooms, surgery and chemotherapy. The Waiting Room is an unflinching portrait of the blood, sweat and tears of cancer treatment. Victoria makes visible the often invisible parts of cancer treatment, the sickness, the fatigue, the tears and the hair loss. At home she filmed with her teenage son, as they came to terms with how single parent family life was transformed by a year of living with cancer. Victoria documents cancer from a patient’s POV, exploring what we can and what we can’t control when our bodies fail us. We have made cancer our enemy, a dark force to be fought by a relentlessly upbeat attitude. The Waiting Room is the antidote to the ‘tyranny of positive thinking’. It challenges the cultural myths that surround this disease, putting under the microscope the language of illness.

Could this young Muslim unseat Boris Johnson at the next election?
Boris Johnson may have his eyes on being the prime minister but, if successful, he will walk in No 10 with the smallest constituency majority since 1906. The candidate trying to oust him from the seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip is Ali Milani, a 24-year-old Muslim immigrant, who describes himself as the 'antithesis' of Boris Johnson Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2

Emotional support animals: has America's epidemic gone too far?
Emotional support animals, or ESAs, have exploded across the US in recent years, with rising numbers of pet owners getting their animals certified online. Unlike in the UK, ESAs have legal status in the US on a tier below traditional service animals, but the backlash has begun - with critics complaining the system is being abused by regular pet owners who want to take their animals into unsuitable public spaces. The Guardian's Richard Sprenger - animal lover but pet sceptic - meets ESA owners and their animals across North America. How your period is making other people rich
People have been tracking their cycles since periods were a thing. These days, menstrual cycles have become big business, and there are lots of ways to profit from them. Toxic school run: how polluted is the air that children breathe?
Most of Britain's cities have had illegally polluted air for nearly a decade and the effect of air pollution is particularly bad on children. Trapped in the city of a thousand mountains - rap in China
A new phenomenon has taken the internet by storm: Chinese rap. But behind its skyrocketing popularity, there is a struggle for freedom of speech. Rappers try to figure out what they can and cannot say after more censorship is announced. In Chongqing, one of China’s biggest cities, surveillance is unavoidable. Announcements echo across the vast squares warning that “morally suspect individuals” are banned from speaking in public. It’s not exactly the most stimulating environment for young people looking for something more than collectivist slogans. They express their artistic resistance against the lack of freedom in their tattoos and underground hip-hop. The rappers feel trapped in the immense city. Buyers Club: the network providing people with affordable hepatitis C medicine
In 2013, a cure was found for hepatitis C. It could save millions of lives, but its price tag of between $40,000 and $84,000 for 84 pills puts it far out of most patients’ reach. However, in India, a generic version of the drug is available for less than $1,000. Denied the affordable medication he needed, Greg Jefferys defied the US pharmaceutical company that holds the patent to set up a worldwide supply network for the generic version.
