The healthy nurse who died at 40 on the Covid frontline: 'She was the best mom I ever had'

Yolanda Coar was 40 when she died of Covid-19 in August this year in Augusta, Georgia. She was also a nurse manager, and one of nearly 3,000 frontline workers who have died in the US fighting this virus, according to an exclusive investigation by the Guardian and Kaiser Health News. Wuhan a year after Covid struck: 'Everyone wants to reset 2020'

Wang Fan is a young craft beer brewer in Wuhan. When his city became the first in the world to enter lockdown, he volunteered to help support other residents, and documented the sudden and strict pandemic rules over that harsh winter. One year later, Wuhan is getting back to normality, and Wang Fan is even releasing a special beer to mark the recovery. He and other young people reflect on trying to get their lives back on track while much of the rest of the world struggles with the virus

Covid from space: the humans furthest from the pandemic

Astronaut Jessica Meir's seven-month mission on the International Space Station (expedition 62, from September 2019-April 2020) glides from the euphoria of the first days in zero gravity, to the deep pressure of the first all-female spacewalk in history, and finally to a completely unexpected event: seeing the global pandemic on earth unfold from orbit. Tunisia and the Arab spring 10 years on: "We tried to rise"

When a young street seller set himself on fire to protest lack of employment opportunities and government corruption, Tunisia became the cradle of the Arab spring revolutions that swept the middle east. Less than a month later, the dictator Ben Ali had to flee the country he had ruled for 23 years. Ten years on, what change has the revolution brought and was the sacrifice of so many worth the price? Have computers killed chess?

Chess is enjoying something of a renaissance, thanks in part to the Netflix series The Queen's Gambit – along with it being a game well-suited to Covid lockdowns. Yet many chess-lovers contend its lure is simultaneously being killed off by computers, which take the romance and mystery from the game in ever more accurate analysis. But this is an adaptable game of paradoxes, and technology has proven to both give and take. Will chess ever be 'solved'? And could it survive if it was? We Begin Again: a musical for 2020

Written by the Olivier award winner James Graham and produced by the Guardian in partnership with the National Theatre, this short musical film is a unifying song for the country to take stock of the extraordinary year gone by and reset for the year ahead. A multi-generational cast reflects on their lives and the impact 2020 has had on them, while a supporting company of 100 community members from the National Theatre’s Public Acts programme in Doncaster and London sings a hopeful chorus encouraging everyone to 'begin again'. Filmed on location and remotely, this online musical is a clear product of these unique times Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The National Theatre ► https://ift.tt/1jCfKAV The National Theatre’s Public Acts ► https://ift.tt/3ajAly5 Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://www.youtube.com/guardianwires Guardian Football ► https://www.youtube.com/user/GuardianFootball Guardian Sport ► http://www.youtube.com/c/GuardianSportVideo Guardian Live ► https://www.youtube.com/user/guardianmembership Guardian Culture ► https://www.youtube.com/guardianculturearts

The Wolf Dividing Norway: the hunter v the environmentalist

With unique access to remote communities in the snow-capped landscape of Norway, this film follows characters on either side of a fierce debate on whether to cull the wolf population. For decades the topic has split political parties, families and communities across the country, with environmentalists world-wide criticising Norway for how it handles its tiny population of critically endangered wolves.  Here, a group of hunters await news from the government on whether their yearly hunt will be permitted, while the environmentalists anticipate the worst.  With angry threats on both sides, the film takes a deep dive into what’s at stake for both groups, as well as the wider world Read our Q & A with the filmmaker ► https://ift.tt/3oBtZy6 Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://www.youtube.com/guardianwires Guardian Football ► https://www.youtube.com/user/GuardianFootball Guardian Sport ► http://www.youtube.com/c/GuardianSportVideo Guardian Live ► https://www.youtube.com/user/guardianmembership Guardian Culture ► https://www.youtube.com/guardianculturearts

How 'voodoo' became a metaphor for evil

'Voodoo' has come to represent something evil when it appears in popular culture. 'Black magic', witchcraft – it's always portrayed as something to be feared. Armenians flee Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan war: ‘This will not break us’

In surrendered areas of Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenian villagers like Martinios have five days to pack and leave before Azeri forces arrive. The district where he lives, Kalbajar, was given up by Armenia as part of a ceasefire deal, which brought a brutal six-week war with Azerbaijan to an end. War here has been generational, and in the 1990s it was the Azeris who fled these villages in a ceasefire handover. Martinios himself moved here soon after to escape the persecution against Armenians in Azerbaijan. Now that peace has been brokered, and after decades of bitterness and mutual distrust, can he bear to leave behind the home he built? Should robots have faces?

Many robots are designed with a face – Hitchbot or Pepper robot – yet don't use their 'eyes' to see, or speak through their 'mouth'. Given that some of the more realistic humanoid robots, like Sophia, are widely considered to be unnerving, and that humans have a propensity to anthropomorphise such designs in technology, should robots have faces at all - or do these faces provide other important functions? And what should they actually look like anyway? How black culture is embracing its African roots

In recent years, Africans on the continent and in the diaspora have become leading voices in black culture – in music, film, fashion, social media, comedy and even our memes. When Grace Shutti was growing up, black culture usually referred to African Americans. But from Beyoncé's visual album, Black is King, to Marvel's Black Panther and musician Diddy executive producing the Nigerian pop star Burna Boy's album, the shift to embrace African art has been seismic. Daisy Chain: Can a Cornish town adapt to survive another lockdown?

When the remote town of St Just, Cornwall, was locked down in March, the small community worried that its economy wouldn't survive. But one town councillor, Daisy Gibbs, rallied an army of volunteers to form 'the Daisy chain', an informal support network to ensure every household in the district had support. Inspired by her imagination and resilience, filmmaker Sky Neal followed the Daisy Chain for seven months, as local businesses adapted and the community pulled together to realise a more sustainable future. However, as a second wave of restrictions threatens, the town has to dig deep to find the resilience they need to ensure their future. Can they re-invent their local economy to survive and thrive beyond Covid? Why the first US cowboys were black

Historians estimate that one in four cowboys were African American, though you’d never guess because the conventional Hollywood image of a cowboy is a white man. Black cowboys have been written out of history, along with the original cattle-raising Native Americans and Mexican vaqueros who taught them. So what are the real origins of cowboy culture in the US? Why hasn't space tourism taken off?

Listening to Richard Branson over the past 20 years, you'd be forgiven for assuming that space was by now being frequented by lots of tourists. However, despite the Virgin Galactic chief's optimism, the space tourism industry has yet to take off. Up to now there have been only seven self-funded citizens in space. And with billionaires such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk in the space race, why are there still no tourists in space? Broken promises and alternative facts: how Donald Trump failed Ohio

After winning the 2016 election, Donald Trump promised to deliver new jobs and economic prosperity to Youngstown, Ohio, a city suffering from decades of decline. But four years on those promises never manifested. Oliver Laughland and Tom Silverstone meet residents who lost their jobs and had their families split by economic necessity, and witness how the demise of the city’s only newspaper made it harder to hold politicians accountable for their failures More from the Anywhere but Washington series:  Civil rights and QAnon candidates: the fight for facts in Georgia – video Battle for the suburbs: can Joe Biden flip Texas? – video Troubled Florida, divided America: will Donald Trump hold this vital swing state? – video

More than 400 people in Chile have suffered eye injuries after being shot by police while protesting against inequality. Justice on trial: three years after murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia

The murder of the Maltese anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017 plunged the country into turmoil. Why horror keeps creeping into black drama

Shows such as I May Destroy You, Atlanta and Insecure depict a wide spectrum of black life, from hilarity to mundanity – but all these shows, at times, also have an impending sense of doom. This feeling of horror, this looming sense of dread, is intentional, but it plays on the common tropes we've been conditioned to expect. Josh Toussaint-Strauss discusses why audiences expect bad things to happen to black characters and explores how a new generation of black creators are using horror to subvert these negative tropes.  Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2 Further reading: Will it destroy us? Donald Trump’s election campaign in 2016 targeted nearly 3.5 million Black Americans to deter them from voting, and the battle for the right to vote is just as important in 2020. Kenya Evelyn travels to Florida where it's the Democrats' most loyal bloc, Black women, who are also bearing the brunt of the coronavirus outbreak, with its impact accelerating the fight for voting rights. Belarus: personal stories from a country in turmoil

Mass protests across Belarus erupted following the widely disputed election that put President Lukashenko in office for a sixth term. Three Belarussian filmmakers document personal stories of people caught up in the political turmoil. Filmmaker Maksim Shved was arrested, imprisoned and then released while the protests around him swelled. Meanwhile, Ekaterina Markavets observes the psychological burden of her fellow citizens and worked with professional psychologists to set up a volunteer support service for people affected by current events. Andrei Kutsila followed a celebrated Belarusian broadcast journalist who worked for State TV for nearly 40 years, now in hospital recovering from injuries she sustained while at a protest. Anime gets blackness wrong, here's how fans are fixing it

How did houses get so expensive?

Since the 1990s, house prices have risen from roughly four to eight times the average national income. Many reasons, such as 1m homes lying empty and rising buy-to-let demand, are cited as reasons for exploding property prices while some factors are missed out entirely. Trump refuses to commit to a peaceful transfer of power: 'there will be a continuation'

The US president has declined to say he will transfer power peacefully in the event he loses the 3 November election to Democratic rival, Joe Biden.  When asked the question by a reporter during a White House press briefing on Wednesday, Trump replied: 'We’re going to have to see what happens, you know that. I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots, and the ballots are a disaster.' Trump refused to commit when asked again: 'Get rid of the ballots and you’ll have a very peaceful – there won’t be a transfer, frankly. There will be a continuation. The ballots are out of control. Guardian US reporter Kenya Evelyn travels home to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of the most segregated cities in the country to find out what Joe Biden and the Democratic Party can do to truly earn the votes of Black Americans. Democrats dealt Milwaukee another economic blow by moving their national convention online, crushing African American residents already feeling the brunt of the national coronavirus crisis and dealing with the shooting of Jacob Blake in nearby Kenosha. They’re fed up, calling out racial inequality and a party some say ignores their issues until it’s time to vote. From generations of moderate elders leaving their legacy, to their young, progressive peers taking to the streets, Black Milwaukeeans are using the power of their voices and votes to demand change Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2

Forced sterilisations and life in China's Uighur Muslim internment camps

Qelbinur Sidik, a former teacher coerced to work in China’s internment camps, speaks about her forced sterilisation at the age of 50, under a government campaign to suppress birth rates of women from Muslim minorities. Sidik said the crackdown swept up not just women likely to fall pregnant, but those well beyond normal childbearing ages. Messages she got from local authorities said women aged 19 to 59 were expected to have intrauterine devices (IUDs) fitted or undergo sterilisation. Young, British and Somali at Cambridge University

As students return to universities around the world, four British-Somali students talk about navigating one of Britain’s most elite institutions: Cambridge University. Their identity is rooted in Somalinimo (‘the essence of being Somali’) and in this love letter to Somali culture, blackness and Islam, they reflect on both belonging and marginalisation.  The women discuss conflicts with their parents, the sense of solidarity they have built at Cambridge, and the legacy they are creating for the next generation of British-Somalis. They give new meaning to an old Somali proverb: ‘Clothing that is not yours cannot shelter you from the cold’ Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2

Is my neighbourhood ‘poisoning’ me? Living in the shadow of a gasworks redevelopment

Since 2016 residents in Southall have questioned whether the gases released from the redevelopment of an old gasworks site could be damaging their health. We followed them for a year as they grow their campaign group, question the authorities and demand to know if the increased air pollution from the site could have put them at greater risk during the coronavirus pandemic Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Londoners claim toxic air from gasworks damaging their health ► https://ift.tt/3lmI55x Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2

Fight for your rights: the trade union for outsourced workers

As work in the UK gets more precarious and the gig economy booms, trade unionism is being reimagined and people from a wide range of backgrounds are joining new kinds of unions, often for the first time. Before coronavirus hit the UK and impacted the healthcare system, grassroots union United Voices of the World was already fighting for the rights of key workers. Through personal stories of one group of cleaners, caterers and porters from St Mary's hospital in London, we chart an inspiring story of resistance – from their first strike through to an influential victory that benefits outsourced workers across five other hospitals.  Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2

Beirut explosion: the volunteer clearing up the wreckage of her home city

In the days after the Beirut explosion, the Guardian followed yoga teacher Jana Saleh as she volunteered to help clear up. She finds chaos, disorder and a lack of support from Lebanese authorities: ‘there is no government, no army … nothing’. In the immediate aftermath, she searches through wreckage, helps out older people and clears a hospital smashed beyond repair. More than 150 people died in the blast, around 5,000 were injured and at least 60 are still missing, according to the health ministry Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu What we know about the Beirut explosion – video explainer ► https://ift.tt/33Dx3SQ 'Martyrs for corruption': the family mourning three firefighters missing in Beirut explosion ► https://ift.tt/30BJblo Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2
