The Tudor hotel turned Covid-19 homeless shelter
When councils were instructed to provide accommodation for their homeless population to protect them from coronavirus, Mike Matthews, owner of the Prince Rupert hotel in Shrewsbury, was one of the first to step in. The decision was part business decision to save his hotel, part philanthropy to help homeless people he admits he usually ignored. The new residents, including a former employee, feel it has given them some dignity back and offered them a rare feeling of family and safety. They also know this cannot be a permanent change to their lives, so what happens next? Bolsonaro won't help with coronavirus, so Brazil's favelas are helping themselves
Brazil’s President Bolsonaro has described coronavirus as a “little flu” and resisted lockdown measures even as the death toll rises. But in Rio’s poorest favelas, where people live in overcrowded conditions and lack proper sanitation, they are bracing for the worst. Buba Aguilar is an activist in Acari who is taking matters into her own hands, soliciting online donations to buy food parcels and basic coronavirus kit - soap, masks - for her neighbours who cannot afford to stop working and stay at home. As Acari records its first coronavirus death, we follow Buba through a typical day fighting to help her community in the face of government inaction. Lockdowns leave poor Latin Americans with impossible choice: stay home or feed families Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2
What do you want A New Normal to look like?
While the long term effects of coronavirus are still very much unknown, it is clear that the impact of this crisis will ripple through every layer of our social fabric. The fear and uncertainty can feel overwhelming, but we can also reimagine what the future, beyond Covid-19 and flattening the curve, might look like. We want to hear what you are concerned about, hopeful for, or even looking forward to in an imagined future, for a Guardian video series produced by Iman Amrani. What are the things about our society that need to be protected and conserved for future generations, and where can we see a need for change? Whether it's jobs and work, the environment, the NHS, the economy, housing, travel or even relationships, let us know. Life and death with a coronavirus ambulance volunteer in Milan
In Milan, hundreds of volunteers are keeping the city’s ambulance services running at night during the coronavirus crisis. Matteo is one of them, juggling urgent medical care with life with a newborn son and a move to a new flat which happened a day before lockdown. His partner Fosca is a nurse on maternity leave, caring for their baby but due to return to work soon. We follow Matteo at night as he volunteers for the ambulance service, and see how covid-19 has impacted him and his partner. Coronavirus tests: what they are and how they can help
There's a lot of talk about coronavirus testing at the moment, but some people are getting confused about what they actually are. How is the antibody test different to the PCR antigen test? What do they do? And why are they important? Why coronavirus mortality rates are so different
How can we understand the risk of death from Covid-19 when there are so many numbers flying around? Well, there are actually three different types of fatality rate: Case Fatality Rate (CFR), Infection Fatality Rate (IFR), and Crude Mortality Rate (CMR). They are calculated in different ways and tell you different things. When we know what each means and how they work, we learn more about how new infections like the coronavirus affect us. Life in lockdown: how our jobs turned upside down
All over the country, people turn the camera on their lives and show how Covid-19 has changed their experience of work. A medical courier at the heart of the crisis demands basic rights, a worker at an empty airport pulls together a union hardship fund - and people in a range of jobs try to navigate the buckling benefits system and the government's scheme to help people who are no longer working. What burns through is the sudden urgency of people joining together to avoid the worst Music: Bells by Phil France on Godwana records - more info here

No TV, no sat nav, no internet: how to fix space's junk problem
As Elon Musk's Starlink and Jeff Bezos's Project Kuiper race to create high-speed internet using satellites orbiting Earth, there's a small problem that could get in the way: debris. From dead spacecraft that have been around since the dawn of the space age to flecks of paint smashing windows on the International Space Station, rubbish is clogging up our orbits. And with objects moving as fast as 15,500mph (25,000 kmph), the satellite services we've come to depend on are at constant risk of collision. So how to fix the problem with junk in space?
