Why the first US cowboys were black
Historians estimate that one in four cowboys were African American, though you’d never guess because the conventional Hollywood image of a cowboy is a white man. Black cowboys have been written out of history, along with the original cattle-raising Native Americans and Mexican vaqueros who taught them. So what are the real origins of cowboy culture in the US? And is there more to modern black cowboy culture than Old Town Road and Lil Nas X? Why hasn't space tourism taken off?
Listening to Richard Branson over the past 20 years, you'd be forgiven for assuming that space was by now being frequented by lots of tourists. However, despite the Virgin Galactic chief's optimism, the space tourism industry has yet to take off. Up to now there have been only seven self-funded citizens in space. And with billionaires such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk in the space race, why are there still no tourists in space? Broken promises and alternative facts: how Donald Trump failed Ohio
After winning the 2016 election, Donald Trump promised to deliver new jobs and economic prosperity to Youngstown, Ohio, a city suffering from decades of decline. But four years on those promises never manifested. Oliver Laughland and Tom Silverstone meet residents who lost their jobs and had their families split by economic necessity, and witness how the demise of the city’s only newspaper made it harder to hold politicians accountable for their failures More from the Anywhere but Washington series: Civil rights and QAnon candidates: the fight for facts in Georgia – video Battle for the suburbs: can Joe Biden flip Texas? – video Troubled Florida, divided America: will Donald Trump hold this vital swing state? – video

We follow Carlos Puebla, a former construction worker who was blinded in one eye and subsequently lost his job. With Chile hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, he is struggling to pay the rent and feed his family. Justice on trial: three years after murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia
The murder of the Maltese anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017 plunged the country into turmoil. Four men have been charged over her killing in a car bomb attack, but there have been no convictions, and many claims and counter-claims have been made during court proceedings. Why horror keeps creeping into black drama
Shows such as I May Destroy You, Atlanta and Insecure depict a wide spectrum of black life, from hilarity to mundanity – but all these shows, at times, also have an impending sense of doom. This feeling of horror, this looming sense of dread, is intentional, but it plays on the common tropes we've been conditioned to expect. Josh Toussaint-Strauss discusses why audiences expect bad things to happen to black characters and explores how a new generation of black creators are using horror to subvert these negative tropes. The captain rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean during the Covid-19 pandemic
Savvas Kourepinis is the volunteer captain of the Astral, a humanitarian boat patrolling the Mediterranean Sea to rescue people attempting to cross the main maritime route from north Africa to Europe. For most of this year, the Covid-19 pandemic forced these vital search-and-rescue missions to cease in what is often referred to as the deadliest migration route in the world. As Kourepinis and his crew set out on one of their first patrols since lockdown restrictions eased, they face stringent coronavirus regulations and the reluctance of nearby countries to take in the people the Astral has rescued

Donald Trump’s election campaign in 2016 targeted nearly 3.5 million Black Americans to deter them from voting, and the battle for the right to vote is just as important in 2020. Kenya Evelyn travels to Florida where it's the Democrats' most loyal bloc, Black women, who are also bearing the brunt of the coronavirus outbreak, with its impact accelerating the fight for voting rights. From mail-in ballots and early voting, to felon disenfranchisement, Black voters are wielding their power to demand more from Democrats ahead of November Black voting power: the fight for change in Milwaukee, one of America’s most segregated cities
Belarus: personal stories from a country in turmoil
Mass protests across Belarus erupted following the widely disputed election that put President Lukashenko in office for a sixth term. Three Belarussian filmmakers document personal stories of people caught up in the political turmoil. Filmmaker Maksim Shved was arrested, imprisoned and then released while the protests around him swelled. Meanwhile, Ekaterina Markavets observes the psychological burden of her fellow citizens and worked with professional psychologists to set up a volunteer support service for people affected by current events. Andrei Kutsila followed a celebrated Belarusian broadcast journalist who worked for State TV for nearly 40 years, now in hospital recovering from injuries she sustained while at a protest. Anime gets blackness wrong, here's how fans are fixing it
Josh Toussaint-Strauss loves anime but too often sees black characters portrayed using racist stereotypes. Even some of the biggest and well-loved shows, like Dragon Ball Z, Cowboy Bebop and One Punch Man, fail in their representation of black characters.
