Heroin to Holyrood? Man behind 'illegal' drug van runs for Scottish parliament
Peter Krykant, who operates a van in Glasgow where people can safely take illegal drugs, is running for Holyrood as part of a campaign calling for the Scottish government to establish legal sites. A former heroin addict, he is pushing for drug reform in Scotland, which has a reported drug deaths rate 15 times higher than the European average. "People are dying out there,' says Krykant, who is able to treat addicts who overdose in his van. Could interventions such as his change Scotland's status as Europe's drug deaths capital? The Mexican women who kicked out the cartels
Adelaida Sánchez is a member of the community police force in Cherán, a Purépecha indigenous town in Michoacán, Mexico, which declared itself autonomous in 2011. When the town was under siege from illegal logging, cartel criminals, and corrupt authorities and the men of the town stood by and did nothing, it was left to women to lead the fightback. On the tenth anniversary of the uprising, Adelaida patrols the town and its forests, providing an oasis amidst the murder, kidnap and extortion across the state Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Photograph credit: Andrea Murcia The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. How the US democracy is coming under attack
The new Georgia voting rights law makes it harder to vote, especially for communities that tend to vote for Democrats – and that's what Republicans want. But it's not just Georgia: these restrictive voting laws are being considered in nearly every state in America, from Arizona to Texas to Florida. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu These efforts come on the heels of the 2020 presidential election, which Republicans lost by slim margins in several states. Many Republicans claimed they lost because of voter fraud – because people who were ineligible to vote found a way to skirt the rules and cast ballots. Election officials around the nation said there was no widespread fraud, but Republicans are using this argument to push for a wide array of laws that will skew election in their favor. If enacted, Americans will have to ask a hard question: is the US still a democracy? Alvin Chang and Sam Levine explain this Republican effort to suppress voting rights as part of the Guardian's Fight to Vote series Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. America's dirty divide: South Baltimore's fight against burning trash
Residents in South Baltimore are fighting to 'starve' their nearby Bresco incinerator due to health concerns over the amount of pollution it creates.
