How megaships cause mega problems
When the Ever Given became stuck in the Suez canal in March 2021, people woke up to the sheer size of these megaships. But these vessels, which now dominate container shipping, have been quietly ballooning in size for more than 50 years, and even doubling in capacity every few years since the turn of the millennium. The bigger they have grown, the more problems they have caused for consumers and producers, problems that extend much further than getting stuck Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. 'Filthy Pride': Marching for LGBTQ+ rights in Orbán's Hungary
Patrik and Zslot are activists and YouTubers representing LGBTQ+ people in Hungary, where a new 'anti-paedophile' law means it is illegal to educate about or to promote LGBTQ+ issues to under-18s. This law follows earlier restrictions by Viktor Orbán's government on trans rights and adoption by gay parents. Patrik and Szlot think gay people are the latest scapegoats for the governing Fidesz party, but Budapest's Pride parade is an opportunity to protest against the new laws and to rally support.

How racist propaganda inspired riots in America's biggest cities
In 1915 the president, Woodrow Wilson, screened the movie Birth of a Nation at the White House – a film that depicts Black men as brutal people who desire white women. Meanwhile white supremacist groups were writing school curriculums and news media were painting Black men as animalistic beings who attacked white women. This set the scene for a week of racial violence targeting Black Americans in 1919, during which two American cities were left in chaos. In Chicago it started with a Black man drowning after white people throw stones at him at a beach for infringing on their space. It led to a confrontation between Black and white citizens, and escalated into white mobs going into Black communities to burn down homes and kill Black people. In Washington DC it started with a minor argument that turned into rape allegations against two Black men, which prompted white mobs to attack Black people in restaurants, trolleys and in their communities. Dozens of Black people were killed during these riots, and few were held accountable. ‘My animals burned alive’: putting life back together after Greece's wildfires
Shepherd Giannis Tsiboukas, 36, confronts the ‘total destruction’ caused after a wildfire ravaged his land on the island of Evia in Greece. Tsiboukas lost more than 40 animals to the fire that destroyed more than 50,000 hectares. Peoples homes and livelihoods have been decimated. Hundreds of wildfires have torn through Greece this month on the heels of its most severe heatwave in decades, which left its forests tinder dry. Other Mediterranean countries – Turkey, Italy, Algeria and Spain among them – have suffered similar problems. Scientists say there is little doubt that climate change from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas is driving more extreme weather events. The east London gym fighting gang violence: 'Death and trauma shouldn't be normality'
Raheel Butt is building The Compound street gym in Newham, east London, an area he calls a “war zone”. After a number of young people lost their lives in the borough, which has been badly affected by postcode gang wars, he’s giving out free memberships to those caught up in serious violence. He has big plans for the gym to be a safe space where young people can rehabilitate and focus on improving their physical and mental health. The Guardian follows Raheel as he mentors the next generation and works with activists from around London to reduce the number of knives on the capital’s streets. RIP SENI: racism, graffiti and the UK's mental health crisis
One morning in June 2020, graffiti reading RIP SENI appeared emblazoned across a public artwork outside the Bethlem royal hospital, a psychiatric hospital in south London. The spray-painted letters drew attention to Olaseni Lewis, a 23-year-old black man who died after being restrained by 11 police officers while in the care of the hospital in 2010. This film follows what happened after the graffiti, as it launches a discussion about race, mental health and injustice in the UK, and the effects on families.
