How Britain is responsible for a third of the world's lost taxes

Tax havens cost governments at least $245bn a year in lost revenue – and many of these havens are British. In fact, the country is leading the world in hiding legitimate money and laundering dirty cash. So how did we get here, and how has Britain managed to preside over a third of the world's lost taxes? ‘This is a place of death’: the fight for a meat-free world | Human Animal

Humans' relationship with animals is under greater focus than ever, as part of a drive to lessen our impact on the planet. In the UK, animal rights activists, buoyed by the rise in veganism and a developing understanding of animal sentience, have spotted an opportunity to grow what has traditionally been a fringe cause.  Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The great majority of these activists are non-violent, dispensing with some of the tactics of their predecessors and aiming to harness this momentum to win hearts and minds. But can they really force the changes they are demanding? This is episode one of a new series called Human Animal which looks at our relationship with animals, after the pandemic exposed just how problematic that can be. Freezing to death: the migrants left to die on the Poland-Belarus border

Migrants are dying in Poland's forested border with Belarus, as the countries are locked in a geopolitical standoff. Polish authorities accuse Belarus of deliberately abandoning migrants near its border in an attempt to destabilise the EU due to the bloc imposing sanctions on Belarus after its disputed election. Poland has responded by declaring an emergency zone, forbidden to journalists and activists, where it is believed that, hidden from sight, they are illegally forcing asylum seekers back over the border instead of processing applications. We follow Piotr Bystrianin, an activist trying to locate desperate migrants in the woods before the border guards do. Made in Bury: Elephant in the Room | Made in Britain

A group of Bury and Rochdale residents who have lived through experiences such as prison, addiction, mental health problems and homelessness came together and called themselves the Elephants Trail. They want to be voice for others, hold local power to account – and, now, make films about what’s happening in their town. This is the second film in a collaborative video series called Made in Britain. Inside America's last whites-only church

In rural Minnesota, a fringe Heathen group known as the Asatru Folk Assembly has purchased a local church – and membership is strictly whites-only. They worship Nordic, pre-Christian gods and they call themselves a 'folk religion' that only accepts those with northern European ancestry. Their racially exclusive ideology is protected by the first amendment. Amudalat Ajasa visits the church to understand how it is gaining influence across the country and to meet the anti-racist Heathens fighting back to reclaim their religion Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. Tone It Up | #WorldMentalHealthDay: A Message from Cofounder Karena Dawn

On #WorldMentalHealthDay and every day, I am committed to advocate for mental health awareness, open the conversation around the illness, and provide resources 🙏 As you know, mental health has had it’s impact on my family. I watched my mother struggle for years and I want you to know that suffering in silence is not the answer. It’s OK to not be OK. 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness in any given year (CDC.gov). You are not alone. You are never alone. Call. Reach out. Visit someone that may need a little extra love this weekend. ✨ The mission of my new foundation, The Big Silence, is to normalize conversations about mental health, share empathy and understanding, and give tools and resources for those struggling with or impacted by a mental health condition. The Big Silence is also the title of my memoir & upcoming podcast. I am honored to continue to break the silence. How UK housing segregates residents

New residential developments in the UK are often segregating people based on those who own their homes and those that live in social housing. Inequality is designed into the buildings themselves with poorer people having to use separate entrances, amenities and communal areas. Britain has a long history of class segregation, and the 'poor door' scenarios are a continuation of inequality being constructed into the urban landscape. Here's why it is still happening Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. The London bus driver who beat the bailiffs to stay in Lewisham

When bus driver and single father of two Anthony Brathwaite was told he and his two children were no longer eligible for council housing in Lewisham, and was offered a property he could not afford outside the borough, he decided to fight back. Having left a council property in his name after his marriage broke down, Anthony was housed in temporary accommodation for two years, until the council reassessed his case, and ruled he had made himself intentionally homeless, and as a result was not eligible for council housing. After offering him a property outside the borough that cost more than half his take home pay as a London bus driver, Anthony decided to fight the eviction with the help of Unite, campaign groups and local people.
