Can horse racing clean up its image? 'Every single death is regrettable'
Horse racing is a lucrative industry, the playground of kings and billionaires, and financed by betting. But its focus on money is at the detriment of horses, which are at constant risk of injury or death, with unknown numbers of also-rans living short, difficult lives away from the racecourse. After a string of controversies, the industry is opening up with welfare and PR initiatives aimed at improving the outlook for thoroughbreds and widening the appeal of the sport. Can racing ever offer a good life to the many horses it produces? Why are all my weather apps different?
Predicting what is going on with the weather is important. It impacts every aspect of our life: from deciding what to wear and when we go outside to predicting natural disasters and managing a public health crisis. In this digital age, we have a vast array of different apps that can predict the weather to a decent level of accuracy. But there is a frustrating anomaly with weather apps: often they cannot seem to agree. Josh Toussaint-Strauss explores why there are regular discrepancies between weather apps and how to get the best out of them. The Beatles, Get Back and London: on the trail of a timeless story
In early 1969, John, Paul, George and Ringo worked on a project in London that would result in an amazing performance on a West End rooftop, and some of their most-loved songs. The story is captured in the new documentary series Get Back. In a film specially commissioned by Apple Corps, John Harris and John Domokos follow the Beatles' steps, get immersed in their archive, and do what the Fab Four's film-makers did – talk to the public Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. Why do so many people hate Insulate Britain? Inside the controversial protest movement
Guardian reporter Damien Gayle spent two months with the environmental campaigners Insulate Britain as they blocked motorways, glued themselves to road networks, got arrested multiple times and defied injunctions banning them from the highways – infuriating everyone from drivers, to cyclists and presenters on breakfast TV. He finds out what drives them, how they plan for key actions, and asks what's next after nine activists are jailed for blocking the M25 Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. Sindicat: evading eviction in one of Europe's most densely populated cities
Near Barcelona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat is one of the most densely populated cities in the EU and home to a large migrant community. Dedicated to protecting the most vulnerable members of this fringe society, a group of young volunteers set up Sindicat, a renters union that is working relentlessly to counteract the housing crisis engulfing the often undocumented residents Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. Inside the controversial world of animal testing: 'It's not putting lipstick on a kitten'
No animal industry attracts more criticism than research, where emotive images of lab rats, vivisection and cosmetic testing rub up against medical breakthroughs, genetic research and treatment for disease. The Guardian's Richard Sprenger visits three research labs to find out how the use of animals for research continues to evolve, and why the current conversation about sentience provides a bedrock for animal welfare Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. 'No man wanted to do it': the woman fighting to save Brazil's Amazon from illegal loggers
Marli Yontep Krikati became the first woman in her Amazon village to lead the forest guardians after the men declared the job too dangerous. The forest guardians are groups of indigenous Brazilians who patrol their territories to guard against illegal logging, farming and mining in the face of lax enforcement of Brazil's environmental laws under Jair Bolsonaro's government. Forest guardian leaders regularly receive death threats from powerful interest groups who encourage these unlawful activities. Now, as Brazil declares an end to deforestation by 2030 as part of the Cop26 summit, we follow the forest guardians on patrol to witness the severity of the deforestation challenge Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Latest news from the climate crisis conference in Glasgow ► https://ift.tt/3poCOir The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. 'We've got a cow to shoot next': What death in farming really looks like
The Guardian's Richard Sprenger steps inside a farm, an abattoir and a knackers yard to see how the industry deals with dead and dying animals, and what that says about our own humanity. The welfare of farm animals is well regulated in the UK, but in many cases these animals still suffer traumatic, messy deaths through sickness, injury or the lengthy process that leads to the abattoir. It’s an area of farming that we rarely think about, let alone see – but the safe disposal of carcasses takes many forms Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Episode 1: ‘This is a place of death’: the fight for a meat-free world | Human Animal ► https://ift.tt/3meAfNG WARNING: This video contains footage of dead animals and animals being killed The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters.
