My struggle to return home to Gaza City: rebuilding on the rubble

Palestinians in Gaza are returning to the north of the strip following a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, many face returning to ruins – including Rama, who graduated from university during the war. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn “We have to return to our land without anything,” said the 22-year-old. “Every place we go, it’s just bombed, we evacuate,” Rama told the Guardian from Deir al-Balah. Along with her five family members, she said she was now living with about 35 other people. After 15 months of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, nine out of 10 homes in the territory have been destroyed or damaged, according to the UN, and at least 46,000 Palestinians have been killed. But despite the difficulties she is facing, Rama said she would not give up trying to rebuild her home, or her ambition to become a translator. “For sure, we lost a lot of things. Everything beautiful was destroyed in a minute,” Rama said. “But it will be again, and it will be better than it was before.” The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. $10.24 a day to risk their lives fighting California's wildfires: LA’s incarcerated firefighters

More than 1,100 incarcerated firefighters have been deployed to respond to the devastating LA fires, which have become some of the deadliest and most destructive in the region’s history. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn The incarcerated crews – now embedded with the California fire department – come from more than 20 “fire camps”, minimum-security facilities across California where they complete prison terms. They are trained to respond to wildfires, floods and other disasters, and the placements are highly sought after as they offer better living conditions, meaningful service positions and reduced sentences. The crews have been working 24-hour shifts (during which they can make up to $34.24), then resting 24 hours before returning. The California corrections department approved several firefighters to speak with the Guardian. Racing to keep our language alive: H̓ágṃ́ṇtxv Qṇtxv Tx̌ (We’re all we got)

There are only seven people left in the world who can fluently speak Marvin's mother tongue, Haíɫzaqvḷa. Out of 6,700 languages spoken worldwide, 40% are in danger of extinction. We join Marvin's unique Haíłzaqv community in British Columbia over two years, as they race against time to save their critically endangered language and culture for future generations. ‘Politicians are ignoring disabled people’: my fight for an independent life

Disability services in the UK have been consistently cut after 14 years of Tory rule and austerity, but with the promise of change from a new Labour government, musician and activist John Kelly is concerned that politicians are still not listening to disabled voices and what they want.
