My struggle to return home to Gaza City: rebuilding on the rubble

Palestinians in Gaza are returning to the north of the strip following a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, many face returning to ruins – including Rama, who graduated from university during the war. Along with her five family members, she said she was now living with about 35 other people. After 15 months of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, nine out of 10 homes in the territory have been destroyed or damaged, according to the UN, and at least 46,000 Palestinians have been killed. But despite the difficulties she is facing, Rama said she would not give up trying to rebuild her home, or her ambition to become a translator. “For sure, we lost a lot of things. Everything beautiful was destroyed in a minute,” Rama said. “But it will be again, and it will be better than it was before.” The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters.
