The Gaza girl whose face was ‘ripped off’ by an Israeli missile

Last June, Mazyouna was at home in Gaza when an Israeli missile struck her house. The blast threw Mazyouna and her mother out on to the street. Her little sister Tala was buried under the rubble but found alive. The bodies of her siblings Hala, 13, and Mohannad, 10, were pulled out of the wreckage in the hours after the attack. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn For five months, as Mazyouna’s wounds became infected and she suffered constant pain from the shrapnel still lodged in her face, her parents repeatedly tried to get permission from COGAT, the Israeli government body for humanitarian affairs, for her to be medically evacuated to the US, where a team of surgeons was waiting to treat her. Finally, in November, she, her mother and her sister were allowed to leave Gaza and travelled with three other critically injured children to the other side of the world, arriving in Texas where she will undergo multiple surgeries and try to rebuild her life. Mazyouna is just one of the thousands of children in Gaza who have been evacuated from Gaza to receive lifesaving treatment abroad. Last month, the World Health Organization urged a rapid scaling-up of medical evacuations from Gaza, where thousands remain in critical condition and an estimated 5,000 children require urgent removal for treatment abroad. Can the UK fix its broken prison system?

The prison population in England and Wales has doubled in the last 30 years, with overcrowding now endemic across the system. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn But the government's strategy of easing this pressure by granting early release to thousands of offenders has had a knock-on effect. With many lacking stability on the outside, reoffending rates are high, exacerbating the existing problem. The Guardian visited Wales to see this playing out on the streets of Bridgend; and the Netherlands, to find out how the Dutch have managed to close more than 20 prisons in the past 10 years, seemingly in complete contrast to the struggles in Britain With thanks to Prison Escape Utrecht: https://ift.tt/4ZVG9lx The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. Disability welfare cuts: ‘They want me to sit in my wheelchair and do nothing’

Disability services in the UK have been consistently cut after 14 years of Tory rule and austerity. Now disability welfare payments are being targeted for a fresh round of cuts by Keir Starmer's Labour government. Musician and activist John Kelly is concerned that politicians are still not listening to disabled voices and what they need to live an independent life. Refusing to fight: Israelis against the war in Gaza

For many Israelis, military service is a rite of passage that lasts two to three years. Being such a formative part of the social contract in Israel, it is unusual for eligible young people to refuse their draft orders. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn Every year some ask for exemptions, but only a handful openly declare themselves as conscientious objectors, commonly known as refuseniks. However, since 7 October and the war in Gaza, refusenik organisations say the number of people refusing the draft has risen, even though during wartime punishments are harsher. The Guardian’s Middle East correspondent, Bethan McKernan, spent time with Itamar Greenberg, an 18-year-old who has been in and out of military prison for almost a year as a result of his refusal to serve The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. How scientists capture polar bears

Each spring since 2003, Jon Aars, senior scientist at the Norwegian Polar Institute, and his team have conducted an annual polar bear monitoring program on Svalbard - collaring, capturing and taking samples from as many bears as they can across several weeks. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn By studying polar bears they get a better understanding of what is happening in this part of the Arctic environment. The bears roam over large distances and, being apex predators, provide lots of information about what is happening lower in the food chain and across different Arctic species. “We have seen really significant changes to the sea ice,” says Aars, adding that: “our main question is how are the bears doing?” The Guardian accompanied Aars and his team on an expedition to the southern end of Spitsbergen island. How homes made from mushroom waste could solve Namibia’s housing crisis

“People think the house would smell because the blocks are made of all-natural products, but it doesn’t,” says Kristine Haukongo. “Sometimes, there is a small touch of wood, but otherwise it’s completely odourless.” Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn Haukongo is the senior cultivator at the research group MycoHab and her job is pretty unusual. She grows oyster mushrooms on chopped-down invasive weeds before the waste is turned into large, solid brown slabs – mycoblocks – that will be used, it’s hoped, to build homes in Namibia. The southern African country, with a population of about 2.7 million, urgently needs at least half a million new homes to address its severe housing shortage. Nearly 90% of households earn less than N$2,700 ($144.69) a month, according to 2016 figures, and can’t afford a home. One in five people live in makeshift homes made out of waste materials or zinc sheets. Speaking from a home made from mushroom waste, we spoke to Kristine Haukongo about exactly how they construct these homes – and the problems they’re addressing. Watch the video to find out more.
