How the Guardian covered 2021: a year of Covid, Cop26 and sporting triumphs

2021 was another extraordinary period for news and investigations, in the Guardian's 200th anniversary year. Twelve months of Covid stories ranged from the hope of vaccination through to government mismanagement. It was also the year of Cop26, with world leaders and activists gathering in an attempt to slow the climate crisis. There were protests against injustice, including those about violence against women in the UK. It was also a year of global political shifts, not least in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, it was a year of sporting inspiration in Euro 2020, the Olympics, and Emma Raducanu's improbable US Open victory. Here are some of the highlights of our journalism over that time. Happiness is a Journey: the hidden life of an American warehouse worker

Warehouse workers in Austin, Texas, work through the night to process newspapers for delivery before Christmas. In this impressionistic documentary, visual artists and film-makers Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan follow Eddie 'Bear' Lopez at the Austin American-Statesman newspaper printing warehouse where Lopez has worked for more than 20 years. Throughout his life Lopez has been collecting items he comes across – creating shrines at his home, in his vehicles and his work station. The film-makers join Lopez as he ventures out into the empty streets to deliver newspapers  Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. How white mobs firebombed homes and decimated a Black community in Illinois

This is the final episode of Red Summers, a 360 video series by artist Bayeté Ross Smith covering the untold American history of racial terrorism. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu After the first world war, Black laborers moved to northern towns like East St Louis, Illinois, trying to escape Jim Crow in the south. In 1917, members of the White American Federation of Labor went on strike – and the company responded by hiring Black workers. Red Summers ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Fw47SNONkY&list=PLa_1MA_DEorG65gEUSGWlMqK3QEU6gmp5 Angry white workers began attacking Black people in the city. Eventually this leads to white mobs firebombing houses with Black families inside, while others outside waited to shoot and kill them. Historians estimate between 39 and 150 Black people were killed in the East St Louis riots. Just months later, another race riot in Houston broke out after member of the all-white Houston police department arrested a high-ranking soldier in an all-Black army regiment – a group that had recently returned from war. Cuts, covid and community in Blackpool: 'There's no such thing as a hopeless case'

Mark and Abbie Butcher run Amazing Graze, a pizzeria which hands out free food and advice to those who need it in Blackpool. One of the poorest parts of the UK, with jobs seasonal and dependent largely on tourist income, Blackpool has been left reeling from the pandemic and the restaurant has seen heightened levels of demand it is struggling to cope with. As the government pursues its hallmark 'levelling up' policy, Mark and Abbie question what the slogan actually means as they deal with the effects of the £20 cut in universal credit on some of the town's most vulnerable, and prepare for the challenging winter ahead. From Libya to Europe: on board a refugee rescue ship

An overcrowded ship with asylum seekers leaves Libya bound for Europe – triggering a high-stakes showdown between a Doctors Without Borders vessel wanting to escort it to safety and the Libyan Coast Guard fighting to turn it back. Lithium mine pits electric cars against sacred Indigenous land

As the United States turns to electric vehicles, solar and wind for its clean energy transition, the demand for lithium – used in rechargeable batteries – is on the rise. In a remote corner of the Nevada desert sits Thacker Pass, the site of a planned lithium mine that would make a major contribution to domestic supply of the mineral. But the project faces opposition from members of nearby Indigenous communities, who say the area holds spiritual, cultural and historical importance and would be irreversibly damaged by large-scale mining activity Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. When wild animals escape: could the exotic pet trade be our downfall? | Human Animal

Exotic pet ownership in the UK has grown 60% since 2000, according to the wildlife charity Born Free. But escaped wild animals are also a growing concern for their potential to spread disease, and the impact an invasive species might have on nature. Can horse racing clean up its image? 'Every single death is regrettable'

Horse racing is a lucrative industry, the playground of kings and billionaires, and financed by betting. But its focus on money is at the detriment of horses, which are at constant risk of injury or death, with unknown numbers of also-rans living short, difficult lives away from the racecourse. After a string of controversies, the industry is opening up with welfare and PR initiatives aimed at improving the outlook for thoroughbreds and widening the appeal of the sport. Why are all my weather apps different?

Predicting what is going on with the weather is important. It impacts every aspect of our life: from deciding what to wear and when we go outside to predicting natural disasters and managing a public health crisis. In this digital age, we have a vast array of different apps that can predict the weather to a decent level of accuracy. But there is a frustrating anomaly with weather apps: often they cannot seem to agree. Josh Toussaint-Strauss explores why there are regular discrepancies between weather apps and how to get the best out of them. The Beatles, Get Back and London: on the trail of a timeless story

In early 1969, John, Paul, George and Ringo worked on a project in London that would result in an amazing performance on a West End rooftop, and some of their most-loved songs. In a film specially commissioned by Apple Corps, John Harris and John Domokos follow the Beatles' steps, get immersed in their archive, and do what the Fab Four's film-makers did – talk to the public Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. 'No man wanted to do it': the woman fighting to save Brazil's Amazon from illegal loggers

Marli Yontep Krikati became the first woman in her Amazon village to lead the forest guardians after the men declared the job too dangerous. The forest guardians are groups of indigenous Brazilians who patrol their territories to guard against illegal logging, farming and mining in the face of lax enforcement of Brazil's environmental laws under Jair Bolsonaro's government. Forest guardian leaders regularly receive death threats from powerful interest groups who encourage these unlawful activities. Now, as Brazil declares an end to deforestation by 2030 as part of the Cop26 summit, we follow the forest guardians on patrol to witness the severity of the deforestation challenge Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Latest news from the climate crisis conference in Glasgow ► https://ift.tt/3poCOir The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. 'We've got a cow to shoot next': What death in farming really looks like

The Guardian's Richard Sprenger steps inside a farm, an abattoir and a knackers yard to see how the industry deals with dead and dying animals, and what that says about our own humanity. The welfare of farm animals is well regulated in the UK, but in many cases these animals still suffer traumatic, messy deaths through sickness, injury or the lengthy process that leads to the abattoir. Tax havens cost governments at least $245bn a year in lost revenue – and many of these havens are British. ‘This is a place of death’: the fight for a meat-free world | Human Animal

Humans' relationship with animals is under greater focus than ever, as part of a drive to lessen our impact on the planet. In the UK, animal rights activists, buoyed by the rise in veganism and a developing understanding of animal sentience, have spotted an opportunity to grow what has traditionally been a fringe cause.  Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The great majority of these activists are non-violent, dispensing with some of the tactics of their predecessors and aiming to harness this momentum to win hearts and minds. Freezing to death: the migrants left to die on the Poland-Belarus border

Migrants are dying in Poland's forested border with Belarus, as the countries are locked in a geopolitical standoff. Polish authorities accuse Belarus of deliberately abandoning migrants near its border in an attempt to destabilise the EU due to the bloc imposing sanctions on Belarus after its disputed election. Poland has responded by declaring an emergency zone, forbidden to journalists and activists, where it is believed that, hidden from sight, they are illegally forcing asylum seekers back over the border instead of processing applications. How UK housing segregates residents

New residential developments in the UK are often segregating people based on those who own their homes and those that live in social housing. Inequality is designed into the buildings themselves with poorer people having to use separate entrances, amenities and communal areas. Britain has a long history of class segregation, and the 'poor door' scenarios are a continuation of inequality being constructed into the urban landscape. The London bus driver who beat the bailiffs to stay in Lewisham

When bus driver and single father of two Anthony Brathwaite was told he and his two children were no longer eligible for council housing in Lewisham, and was offered a property he could not afford outside the borough, he decided to fight back. Having left a council property in his name after his marriage broke down, Anthony was housed in temporary accommodation for two years, until the council reassessed his case, and ruled he had made himself intentionally homeless, and as a result was not eligible for council housing. After offering him a property outside the borough that cost more than half his take home pay as a London bus driver, Anthony decided to fight the eviction with the help of Unite, campaign groups and local people. Saintmaking: the canonisation of Derek Jarman by queer nuns

This year marks the 30th anniversary of film-maker Derek Jarman’s canonisation by an activist group of gay male nuns known as the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. At the time in 1991, Derek Jarman was the most prominent person in the UK living openly with HIV. He was outspoken, radical and unapologetically queer. The perfect antidote, in the Sisters’ eyes, to Ian McKellen’s acceptance of a knighthood in the 1991 new year honours

How megaships cause mega problems

When the Ever Given became stuck in the Suez canal in March 2021, people woke up to the sheer size of these megaships. But these vessels, which now dominate container shipping, have been quietly ballooning in size for more than 50 years, and even doubling in capacity every few years since the turn of the millennium. The bigger they have grown, the more problems they have caused for consumers and producers, problems that extend much further than getting stuck Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. 'Filthy Pride': Marching for LGBTQ+ rights in Orbán's Hungary

Patrik and Zslot are activists and YouTubers representing LGBTQ+ people in Hungary, where a new 'anti-paedophile' law means it is illegal to educate about or to promote LGBTQ+ issues to under-18s. This law follows earlier restrictions by Viktor Orbán's government on trans rights and adoption by gay parents. Patrik and Szlot think gay people are the latest scapegoats for the governing Fidesz party, but Budapest's Pride parade is an opportunity to protest against the new laws and to rally support.

How racist propaganda inspired riots in America's biggest cities

In 1915 the president, Woodrow Wilson, screened the movie Birth of a Nation at the White House – a film that depicts Black men as brutal people who desire white women. Meanwhile white supremacist groups were writing school curriculums and news media were painting Black men as animalistic beings who attacked white women. This set the scene for a week of racial violence targeting Black Americans in 1919, during which two American cities were left in chaos. In Chicago it started with a Black man drowning after white people throw stones at him at a beach for infringing on their space. It led to a confrontation between Black and white citizens, and escalated into white mobs going into Black communities to burn down homes and kill Black people. In Washington DC it started with a minor argument that turned into rape allegations against two Black men, which prompted white mobs to attack Black people in restaurants, trolleys and in their communities. Dozens of Black people were killed during these riots, and few were held accountable. ‘My animals burned alive’: putting life back together after Greece's wildfires

Shepherd Giannis Tsiboukas, 36, confronts  the ‘total destruction’ caused after a wildfire ravaged his land on the island of Evia in Greece. Tsiboukas lost more than 40 animals to the fire that destroyed more than 50,000 hectares. Peoples homes and livelihoods have been decimated.  Hundreds of wildfires have torn through Greece this month on the heels of its most severe heatwave in decades, which left its forests tinder dry. Other Mediterranean countries – Turkey, Italy, Algeria and Spain among them – have suffered similar problems. Scientists say there is little doubt that climate change from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas is driving more extreme weather events.  Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. The east London gym fighting gang violence: 'Death and trauma shouldn't be normality'

Raheel Butt is building The Compound street gym in Newham, east London, an area he calls a “war zone”. RIP SENI: racism, graffiti and the UK's mental health crisis

One morning in June 2020, graffiti reading RIP SENI appeared emblazoned across a public artwork outside the Bethlem royal hospital, a psychiatric hospital in south London. The spray-painted letters drew attention to Olaseni Lewis, a 23-year-old black man who died after being restrained by 11 police officers while in the care of the hospital in 2010. This film follows what happened after the graffiti, as it launches a discussion about race, mental health and injustice in the UK, and the effects on families. Cebelihle Mbuyisa is a freelance journalist who was beaten for covering pro-democracy protests in the kingdom of Eswatini. How algorithms are cutting Americans' healthcare

US states are using algorithms to figure out whether people are eligible for public benefits and how much care they should receive. But it isn't without its problems. For example, in Arkansas a combination of design decisions and software errors had left many people without the care they needed. So that begs the question: if government officials don't have the technical knowledge to understand these algorithms, how can they ensure the algorithms are doing what they want? The Guardian follows Guilherme Boulos, who ran against Bolsonaro in the last elections, as he leads thousands through the streets of São Paulo, calling for the country’s president to be impeached.  The pressure is mounting on Bolsonaro as he faces a scandal over allegedly corrupt Covid vaccine deals and mounting public rage over his handling of a pandemic that has killed more than half a million people.  Boulos has helped led and organise two mass demonstrations already in the past month and will be at the forefront of a third protest this Saturday. Many of Omar’s neighbours also lost loved ones, and search through the rubble for possessions, after a war which killed more than 250 people in Israel and Gaza, the vast majority of them Palestinians Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu ‘One name in a long list’: the pointless death of another West Bank teenager ► https://ift.tt/34mWG9O The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. Tulsa race massacre: an act of terrorism America tried to forget – 360 video

On the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa race massacre, artist Bayeté Ross Smith uses archival photos to create immersive 360 scenes of these events. He finds that the underlying political and economic injustices were not only never addressed, but repeated time and again over the past century. This story was suppressed from history books and the white perpetrators were never held accountable. And it wasn't just Tulsa. Dozens of other racial terrorism events from 1917 to 1921 have also gone untold, even within the victims' families.  This is part one of Red Summers, a 360 video series by artist and filmmaker Bayeté Ross Smith on the untold American history of racial terrorism from 1917 to 1921. The project is funded by Black Public Media, Eyebeam, Sundance Institute, Crux XR and the Open Society Foundations.
