How the Guardian covered 2021: a year of Covid, Cop26 and sporting triumphs
2021 was another extraordinary period for news and investigations, in the Guardian's 200th anniversary year. Twelve months of Covid stories ranged from the hope of vaccination through to government mismanagement. It was also the year of Cop26, with world leaders and activists gathering in an attempt to slow the climate crisis. There were protests against injustice, including those about violence against women in the UK. It was also a year of global political shifts, not least in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, it was a year of sporting inspiration in Euro 2020, the Olympics, and Emma Raducanu's improbable US Open victory. Here are some of the highlights of our journalism over that time. Happiness is a Journey: the hidden life of an American warehouse worker
Warehouse workers in Austin, Texas, work through the night to process newspapers for delivery before Christmas. In this impressionistic documentary, visual artists and film-makers Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan follow Eddie 'Bear' Lopez at the Austin American-Statesman newspaper printing warehouse where Lopez has worked for more than 20 years. Throughout his life Lopez has been collecting items he comes across – creating shrines at his home, in his vehicles and his work station. The film-makers join Lopez as he ventures out into the empty streets to deliver newspapers Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. How white mobs firebombed homes and decimated a Black community in Illinois
This is the final episode of Red Summers, a 360 video series by artist Bayeté Ross Smith covering the untold American history of racial terrorism. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu After the first world war, Black laborers moved to northern towns like East St Louis, Illinois, trying to escape Jim Crow in the south. In 1917, members of the White American Federation of Labor went on strike – and the company responded by hiring Black workers. Red Summers ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Fw47SNONkY&list=PLa_1MA_DEorG65gEUSGWlMqK3QEU6gmp5 Angry white workers began attacking Black people in the city. Eventually this leads to white mobs firebombing houses with Black families inside, while others outside waited to shoot and kill them. Historians estimate between 39 and 150 Black people were killed in the East St Louis riots. Just months later, another race riot in Houston broke out after member of the all-white Houston police department arrested a high-ranking soldier in an all-Black army regiment – a group that had recently returned from war. Only the Black soldiers were penalized The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. Cuts, covid and community in Blackpool: 'There's no such thing as a hopeless case'
Mark and Abbie Butcher run Amazing Graze, a pizzeria which hands out free food and advice to those who need it in Blackpool. One of the poorest parts of the UK, with jobs seasonal and dependent largely on tourist income, Blackpool has been left reeling from the pandemic and the restaurant has seen heightened levels of demand it is struggling to cope with. As the government pursues its hallmark 'levelling up' policy, Mark and Abbie question what the slogan actually means as they deal with the effects of the £20 cut in universal credit on some of the town's most vulnerable, and prepare for the challenging winter ahead. From Libya to Europe: on board a refugee rescue ship
An overcrowded ship with asylum seekers leaves Libya bound for Europe – triggering a high-stakes showdown between a Doctors Without Borders vessel wanting to escort it to safety and the Libyan Coast Guard fighting to turn it back. As the Libyans issue armed threats, tension grows below deck. With European countries' responsibilities toward refugees once again in the spotlight, here is an inside view of the desperate hope that is the deadly race for Europe Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. Lithium mine pits electric cars against sacred Indigenous land
As the United States turns to electric vehicles, solar and wind for its clean energy transition, the demand for lithium – used in rechargeable batteries – is on the rise. In a remote corner of the Nevada desert sits Thacker Pass, the site of a planned lithium mine that would make a major contribution to domestic supply of the mineral. But the project faces opposition from members of nearby Indigenous communities, who say the area holds spiritual, cultural and historical importance and would be irreversibly damaged by large-scale mining activity Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. When wild animals escape: could the exotic pet trade be our downfall? | Human Animal
Exotic pet ownership in the UK has grown 60% since 2000, according to the wildlife charity Born Free. But escaped wild animals are also a growing concern for their potential to spread disease, and the impact an invasive species might have on nature. The Guardian visits BeastWatch, an organisation of volunteers that specialises in the safe retrieval of exotic pets, and Bristol Zoo to see how wild animals are kept in captivity and ask if new laws can address some of the issues Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Watch more episodes of Human Animal: a series looking at our evolving relationship with other animals ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj7Bzd3lLB8&list=PLa_1MA_DEorGQp4zABhqS98xgpAWulWRa The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters.
