Will Gisèle Pelicot’s trial change how we talk about sexual abuse?
Warning: this video contains discussions of sexual abuse and rape Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn “It’s time that the macho, patriarchal society that trivialises rape changes”. This is what Gisèle Pelicot, whose ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, has admitted drugging her and inviting men to rape her for more than a decade, said in her final statement to the criminal court in Avignon, where he and 51 other men have been standing trial. The trial, which has been considered one of the most horrific France has ever seen, comes to a close this week, with French prosecutors demanding that Dominique Pelicot be jailed for 20 years, the maximum available sentence, “I think that this case should help us understand how common rape is and how deep-rooted [rape] culture is,” says Guardian columnist Rokhaya Diallo – who says that Gisèle’s brave choice to waive her anonymity to force a debate on rape culture, according to her lawyers, has helped her be “the voice of the victims who do not have such an opportunity to have global attention to them”. Gisèle Pelicot, 72, has become a feminist hero after insisting that the rape trial of her ex-husband and the other men be held in public. “It’s not for us to have shame, it’s for them,” she said to the court during the trial. The case has caused outrage in France, where activists have called for changes to the country’s rape law to explicitly include consent for the first time. But, says Rokhaya Diallo, while this case is exceptional in its scale, the issues it draws attention to are bigger than just one country. “Male violence is endemic, it’s systemic,” says Diallo. How women in Iran are fighting harsh new morality laws #iran #moralitypolice
Parastoo Ahmadi, an Iranian singer who was arrested alongside her two band members at the weekend for performing live on YouTube without wearing a hijab, is one example of the growing resistance of women in Iran against a series of new and oppressive laws. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn “I’m Parastoo, a girl who wants to sing for the people I love. This is a right I could not ignore,” she wrote in the caption. Two years after protests erupted following the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who had been arrested for not wearing a hijab, new laws promoting the “culture of chastity and hijab” have been passed by the Iranian authorities and come with severe penalties. They include the death penalty for women who protest against the mandatory hijab under charges of “corruption on earth”, as well as encouraging citizens to spy on each other. While President Masoud Pezeshkian’s administration has requested a delay in enforcement and may draft an amendment bill (which could take up to six months), women in Iran continue to be punished. “We are being harassed, detained, fined and our cars are being confiscated already,” said one 23-year-old woman who took part in the Woman, Life, Freedom protests in September 2022, speaking anonymously to the Guardian. “I have received several SMS [text messages] with fines over driving without a hijab. They’ve already killed Mahsa anyway and, by now making it into law, they’re simply legalising the killing.” The Guardian publishes independent journalism, made possible by supporters. ‘Degrading to Africans’: why I think we should boycott this Christmas song
In 1984, charity supergroup called Band Aid made Do They Know It's Christmas? to raise money for people in Ethiopia during a national crisis. Two more versions were released – including one in 2014 aiming to help victims of the Ebola outbreak. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn Afrobeats artist Fuse ODG was invited to take part in that edition, but refused, saying the single did ‘more harm than good’. He added that the organisers did not agree with his request to change some of the lyrics and imagery used in the campaign that are ‘degrading’ to Africans. Now, with a new 40-year anniversary recording to be released in a few days, the MOBO award-winning artist is continuing to call out the issue – and has had other artists back him. “I understand that there might be good intentions … but there’s a way to do that without also kicking them while they’re down,” says the British-Ghanaian artist. Fuse ODG, who has recently launched an app about African history and languages, says the important thing is to lift up voices and tell stories that are often overlooked on the global stage – such as the fact that a cure for Ebola was discovered by a doctor from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dr Jean-Jacques Muyembe. In response to the growing backlash, Bob Geldof, one of the founders of Band Aid, told the Conversation: “This little pop song has kept hundreds of thousands if not millions of people alive. In fact, just today [it] has given hundreds of thousands of pounds to help those running from the mass slaughter in Sudan, and enough cash to feed a further 8,000 children in the same affected areas of Ethiopia as 1984.” Watch this video to learn more about why Fuse ODG thinks this – and other similar campaigns – is so damaging to Africa in the long term, and what he believes can help tackle negative stereotypes. How Azerbaijan's 'eternal flame' is fed by oil and gas #cop29 #yanardag
How did Azerbaijan become known as ‘the land of fire’? Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn If you drive up the road from the world’s biggest climate summit taking place in Baku this week, you will reach a fire that has been burning for centuries. Welcome to Azerbaijan, the ‘world’s first petrostate’. It gets more than half of its income from oil and gas, and plans to keep on drilling for more. This made the country a very controversial choice for this year’s annual United Nations climate conference, known as Cop29. Especially since, last year’s summit was also held in a petrostate, the United Arab Emirates. Last week, a group of influential climate policy experts criticised this and in a letter to the UN they wrote “It is now clear that the Cop is no longer fit for purpose. We need a shift from negotiation to implementation.” Watch the video to hear from our environment reporter Ajit Niranjan into whether a petrostate be allowed to host a climate summit. How fast fashion waste is choking Ghana’s beaches #fastfashion #fashion #clothing
Do you ever wonder where all our fast fashion cast-offs end up? Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn In Ghana, Joseph Ayesu has seen the beaches in the capital city where he grew up become increasingly choked by the weight of fast fashion waste disproportionately ending up on its shores from countries like the UK, US and China. Read more ► https://ift.tt/78eGo3Q “Instead of fishes, [fishermen] are catching clothes,” Ayesu says. The west African country is one of the world’s largest importers of secondhand clothing from the global north, which is known locally as “obroni wawu” – meaning “dead white man’s clothes”. Ayesu and his team at @theorispresent an Accra-based non-profit trying to tackle textile waste in Ghana, have headed to the city’s beach every week for the last year to try and shift the “mountains of clothing”. They collect an average of 25 tonnes of waste clothing each time. But their progress comes in the face of increasing amounts of fast fashion ending up on their shores. By 2030, global clothing consumption is projected to rise by 63% to 102 million tons from 62 million tonnes in 2019 – equivalent to more than 500 billion additional T-shirts – according to the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee published in 2019. To tackle what they call “waste colonialism”, The Or Foundation is calling for the top 20 brands found in Ghana’s waste stream to publish how many garments they produce each year, with a deadline of Black Friday in November. How these #KamalaHarris canvassers are fighting #uselection apathy in Pennsylvania

How Trump’s immigration policies are getting more extreme #trump #immigration #donaldtrump
At a vitriol-filled rally in Madison Square Garden in New York, Donald Trump ally and podcaster Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico an "island of garbage”, among a series of racist remarks about Latinos, migrants and others. How is Trump winning the US immigration debate? ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JP303YOKRw This was not a one-off for the Trump campaign – this US election cycle has been dominated by the Republican presidential candidate stoking fear about immigrants. But Trump’s extreme targeting of immigration doesn’t just stick to rhetoric. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn The mass deportation plans envisaged by a potential Trump White House 2.0 dwarf anything previously seen – both in scale and in the intensity of the former president’s determination to ride roughshod over legal guardrails. These policies raise both ethical and financial concerns. The American Immigration Council says Trump’s mass deportation plans could cost $88bn a year, and would come with a huge human cost, as about 5.1 million children who are US citizens live with an undocumented family member. While many of Trump’s immigration policies during his presidency were largely stymied in the courts, this time we need to take him at his word, says David Leopold, a former president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Trump's immigration policies also align with other aspects of his vision for a potential second term in office, which promises to be more ruthless, radical and vengeful than any administration in modern times. How I stop Senegal’s kids boarding ‘death boats’ to Europe
The migration route from Africa to Spain's Canary Islands is one of the world's deadliest, with young people often attempting the journey in flimsy fishing canoes. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn Senegalese fisherman Moustapha Diouf once tried to make the voyage himself, seeking a better life in Europe for his family, but catastrophe struck and he lost several friends on the way. Now back in Dakar, he is trying to persuade young fishermen not to make the same journey, helping them instead to set up small businesses. But with fish stocks dwindling due to EU trawlers operating off Senegal's coast, work has evaporated and young people are increasingly desperate, with more and more choosing to risk it all for the chance of a better life. “If you survive in Gaza during this war, you have a near death experience everyday.” Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn Majdi Fathi is a freelance photojournalist living and working from al-Aqsa hospital, the only functioning facility in central Gaza. Along with many other journalists based there, he evacuated from northern Gaza and now works in incredibly difficult conditions, with dwindling food, water and electricity, and the constant threat of missile strikes from Israel. The Committee to Protect Journalists has recorded that at least 128 media workers have been killed so far in the Israel-Gaza war, and in December accused the Israeli military of targeting journalists and their families in the territory. The IDF denies it targets journalists. Fathi, who has been a photojournalist for more than 16 years, has documented his past year living and reporting from the war, which was triggered by Hamas’s 7 October attack on southern Israel. My Paralympic dream: the amputee from Gaza cycling for Palestine
The Gaza Sunbirds are a team of paracyclists from Gaza, set up in 2020 by cyclist Alaa al-Dali after he was shot in the leg by an Israeli sniper during the Great March of Return in 2018. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn The Sunbirds' journey has taken them from the war-ravaged Palestinian territory to Belgium, Italy and Kazakhstan in pursuit of their dream: to represent Palestine at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris. The Gaza war has resulted in thousands of amputations, including those carried out on an estimated 1,000-plus children, all of whom have immediate and life-long needs. Why is anti-immigrant sentiment on the rise in Canada?
Canada has long been celebrated for its welcoming stance towards immigrants, fostering a prosperous, multicultural society. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn But in recent years, rising concerns over living costs and housing shortages have fuelled a mounting scepticism of the country’s mass immigration policies. Inside the war on kush: The drug ‘mixed with human bones’ taking over Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is facing a drug abuse epidemic of young people becoming addicted to ‘kush’ - a deadly cocktail of chemicals, drugs and even human bones. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn The government has announced a crackdown on kush and called the crisis a national emergency as unknown numbers of people are dying from its use. While police raid drug dens, the government burns confiscated drugs, and desperate families turn to the help of ‘kush healers’ who put users in chains. Is a new opioid crisis about to devastate the UK?
When the Afghan Taliban ceased production of heroin, global supplies were depleted, with new, powerful synthetic opioids flooding in to fill the vacuum.
