How Azerbaijan's 'eternal flame' is fed by oil and gas #cop29 #yanardag
How did Azerbaijan become known as ‘the land of fire’? Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn If you drive up the road from the world’s biggest climate summit taking place in Baku this week, you will reach a fire that has been burning for centuries. Welcome to Azerbaijan, the ‘world’s first petrostate’. It gets more than half of its income from oil and gas, and plans to keep on drilling for more. This made the country a very controversial choice for this year’s annual United Nations climate conference, known as Cop29. Especially since, last year’s summit was also held in a petrostate, the United Arab Emirates. Last week, a group of influential climate policy experts criticised this and in a letter to the UN they wrote “It is now clear that the Cop is no longer fit for purpose. We need a shift from negotiation to implementation.” Watch the video to hear from our environment reporter Ajit Niranjan into whether a petrostate be allowed to host a climate summit.
