The veiled rapper breaking taboos for women in Senegal

Mina La Voilée is a female rapper from Parcelles, Dakar, who is breaking taboos by rapping about women's rights. As a woman who chooses to wear a veil, she explains how criticism from industry professionals who told her "the veil and hip hop don't flow together" drove her to succeed, and inspired her to tackle other controversial societal issues in her lyrics such as child marriage, rape and infanticide. She performs both as a solo artist and as part of an all-female rap movement, Genji Hip Hop, who use their music to fight cultural stereotypes and gender violence

The Last Dragon: a black culture tribute to kung fu

The Last Dragon is arguably the film that best exemplifies the connection between black culture and kung fu. Which is why Josh Toussaint-Strauss copped a lot of stick for leaving it out of his previous video, about that very subject. It was left out because there are so many examples of this cultural crossover, it would require a video all of it's own. So this is a tribute to The Last Dragon, which in turn is a tribute to the kung fu film genre, as well as a celebration of black culture Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2

Play your part in the Guardian's charity appeal: a tree is for life

The 2019 Guardian and Observer appeal is supporting four charities that help to slow down the damage of the climate crisis - by harnessing the power of nature.  Donate now  They plant trees, protect forests and restore ancient woodlands, in the UK and in the Amazon. Living ecosystems, such as forests, naturally remove huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. With your help, these charities can continue to do this vital work.

Why Christmas was once illegal

In the 17th century, Christmas was completely banned in England and its territories, for 17 years. Shops were forced to stay open, public Christmas drinking and festive feasting were illegal, mince pies were seized, even putting up foliage as decoration was banned. Divided Cities: stories of five cities split by major global divisions - series trailer

The fall of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago seemed to herald a more united future. Since then our world has fractured anew and our cities feel more divided than ever, from politics to climate to food. Divided Cities reveals five surprising stories of how major global divisions are playing out in cities around the world: Havana’s strange system of two currencies, the private sector one worth 24 times the state one; populist demands for Melilla, a Spanish outpost in Africa, to refuse asylum seekers by building a huge Trumpian wall; the “food deserts” of Memphis, Tennessee that lack what seems a basic right in richer neighbourhoods – a supermarket; Nicosia, Europe’s last divided capital, where young Cypriots are pushing back against conscription; and Delhi, a city riven by "climate apartheid" into those who can protect themselves from the elements and those who must live, suffer and sometimes die in the pollution and deadly heat. Divided Cities looks beyond Trump and Brexit to the deeper global divisions of a world ever more split into “us” and “them” Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Episode 1: ‘Make Spain great again’ – does Melilla really need a Trump-style wall? ► https://ift.tt/2PTf6ZW Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2

Anywhere But Westminster: are the Tories losing their suburban heartlands?

As their national election trek goes on, John Harris and John Domokos hit the Surrey town of Guildford, recently won by the Conservatives with a big majority, but shaken up by Brexit, a new cosmopolitan culture, and people's rising unease about poverty and homelessness. The former Conservative MP is running as an independent; the Lib Dems think they're on the march. Only one thing is certain: all the old political categories and cliches are useless

Should we fear chlorinated chicken?

Chlorinated chicken hardly sounds like something you'd enjoy to read on a menu. Why do Havana's taxi drivers earn more than doctors? | Divided Cities

Cuba's strange dual system means that public sector workers and those in private enterprise are paid in different currencies. Laura, a GP, earns Cuban pesos, whereas Rogelio, who was a doctor, now makes more in an hour as a taxi driver than he used to in a month because he is paid in 'convertible pesos', which are worth 24 times more. Beyond Brexit, Corbyn and Johnson: Stoke's politics of hope | Anywhere but Westminster

In the 2016 referendum, John Harris and John Domokos watched the Staffordshire city vote heavily to leave the EU. Since then, some remainers say they have grown tired of hearing vox pops from leave areas such as Stoke. But away from the election's noise and the political polarisation in the city, which has made one local MP's life incredibly difficult, there are trailblazing efforts to turn Stoke around, which we can all learn from Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► https://ift.tt/16bR3Lu Support the Guardian ► https://ift.tt/2VEEwKb Today in Focus podcast ► https://ift.tt/2D74a4z Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://ift.tt/2feoDdN The Guardian ► https://ift.tt/1AFLGzy The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://ift.tt/1J9JUwL Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► https://ift.tt/1yECE17 Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► https://ift.tt/16bR6H2

‘Make Spain great again’: does Melilla really need a Trump-style wall? | Divided Cities

Everyone in Melilla has some connection to the city’s most visible and controversial feature: a huge barbed-wire fence, which separates this Spanish port city from the rest of north Africa. Asylum seekers like Aboubacar wait for months in hidden forest camps to scale the fence, populist politicians like Jesús want to strengthen it, and both the Moroccan and Melillan economy depend on the 30,000 Moroccans like Youssra who cross through it every day to work. Will Melilla embrace its fate as a city embedded in Africa – or will it succumb to populist Trump-style demands to build a wall? Why do so many black people love kung fu?

Kung fu references crop up a lot in black culture from Jim Kelly in Enter the Dragon and Wesley Snipes' Blade films to hip-hop artists like Wu-Tang Clan. This translates to the UK too. Josh Toussaint-Strauss watched a lot of martial arts growing up and found that his family and friends all wanted to kick arse like Bruce Lee. So why do so many black people love Kung-Fu? More than 33% of students at UK schools are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, but only 4% of the protagonists in children's books in the UK are BAME. The 'Lost Rambos' of Papua New Guinea: how weapons and Hollywood changed tribal disputes

Tribal fighting has long been present in the Papua New Guinea highlands, but the influx of modern automatic weaponry in the 1990s turned local disputes into lethal exchanges that threatened to permanently reshape highlands culture. Bootleg copies of the American film Rambo circulated in remote communities, becoming a crude tutorial on the use of such weaponry. The influence of the film was so pronounced that the term Rambo is now used in Papuan dialects to describe hired mercenaries who are paid to support local combatants in violent tribal disputes. Here we meet the fighters and the peacekeepers trying to navigate a path between tradition and modernity. Her mother is undocumented, and like many families with mixed documented status, they face the threat of family separation. With responsibility for earning enough to look after her sisters, Ashley balances working nights in a California strawberry-freezing factory with her school attendance. She struggles to get enough sleep and to get her homework done.
